INTERVIEW WITH CHRISTIEN ANHOLT
Questions from Lynda White
1. At which hospital were you born?
REPLY
The old Charring Cross hospital, on the Strand.
2. Would you like to have had a brother or sister?
REPLY
Sometimes, but on the whole I'm happy being an only child. Both my parents were only children.
3. What schools did you attend?
REPLY
Gospel Oak primary school, then North Bridge House, and the William Ellis secondary school.
4. Did you behave yourself at school?
REPLY
I did to begin with. I never really enjoyed school. I got bullied a fair bit because my Dad was on the telly. I began to rebel in my early teens and played truant.
5. Did you play any sports at school, or afterwards?
REPLY
I hated sports in school. I joined the Highgate Harriers at one point, thought I wanted to get into running, but I didn't last. Did a little boxing at one point, but didn't like getting punched in the face.
6. Did you watch your dad on TV when you were a boy?
REPLY
Yes, Space 1999 was on Saturday morning TV. Loved it. I guess that's when I got the idea I wanted to act.
7. Did your parents encourage you when you said you wanted to be an actor?
REPLY
They did, they let me pursue it, but didn't push me into or away from it. They wanted me to also focus on school.
8. What did you play in your first stage performance? What age were you?
REPLY
First stage performance was Odysseus at School; I played Telemecus, Odysseus' son.
9. What did you play in your first screen appearance? What age were you? (if you did any TV before Reunion, that is).
REPLY
I did a 'seeing and doing' episode when I was 7, playing the son of Hadrian, of Hadrian’s Wall.
10. Have you acted in any TV commercials anywhere in the world? If so, where and what did you advertise?
REPLY
I did a toothpaste commercial when I was 7 or 8. Another commercial for TSB I think when I was in my late teens.
11. What is your favourite episode of Relic Hunter?
REPLY
Purely from a sentimental point of view, 'Love Letter' because my Dad was in it. It was the first and only time I worked with my Dad, and one of the last things he did before he passed away.
12. Did you ever get hurt whilst filming Relic Hunter, or any other film/TV show?
REPLY
Whilst filming 'Pandora’s Box' Relic Hunter, in Seville, I landed badly during a stunt and put my bottom teeth through my lip. Still have the scar from that one!
13. Do you have any special memories of your dad, which you feel you can share, from when he appeared with you in Relic Hunter?
REPLY
It was the first time I had worked with my Dad, I don't usually get nervous on set but when it came to shooting the first scene with him I got nervous and fluffed my lines. I think it kind of put him at ease, as I suspect he might have been a little nervous himself.
14. Have you met Tia since you stopped filming Relic Hunter?
REPLY
Tia came to my wedding in England after we had finished shooting season 3. After that we kind of lost touch. I follow her on Twitter now!
15. Would you like to do a Season 4 of Relic Hunter? Or even a movie to give a proper ending to the series?
REPLY
Yes! I loved working on the series, I loved playing Nigel, I loved working with Tia! So yes, yes, yes!
16. How did you feel when you heard you’d won the Best Actor award at the E'Febo Doro awards in Sicily, for Reunion?
REPLY
It felt great! It is always nice to have ones work celebrated. I am my own harshest critic though!
17. Did you enjoy doing Hamlet? You seemed to be on the screen quite a bit.
REPLY
That was a great experience. I was there for all 14 weeks of shooting. I was only 19 and working with some amazing people! Mel was very friendly and I had a lot of fun.
18. Was it hard playing Nelson, the yob, in Appetite? That was so different to the other roles you’ve played.
REPLY
Not hard at all! Playing nasty is always more fun. You can extend the boundaries and run riot.
19. Was it painful to be suspended in that harness in Preaching to the Perverted?
REPLY
Yes! I remember that day well! Most uncomfortable and it was also very cold!
20. Were you really in a plane when the pilot did some aerobatics, when you were filming Flyboys?
REPLY
Yes. We went up with a pilot in the front seat and a camera strapped in front of me in the back seat. We also did a fair bit of green screen shooting in a sound stage.
21. Was it as gruesome as it looks working on a horror movie set like Dark Corners?
REPLY
Ha! There was one day where there was so much fake blood on Thora Birch she was almost completely red! On set it never really seems as gruesome as it does on film.
22. Did you enjoy playing the villain in Ben 10 Race Against Time?
REPLY
Yes, again, playing the villain is always more fun. Plus I got to work with Lee Majors, the Bionic man! One of my childhood hero's!
23. What film did you enjoy making the most?
REPLY
I think my first, Reunion. It was just an amazing experience all round.
24. What play did you enjoy doing the most?
REPLY
Another time with Albert Finney or The Hothouse with Harold Pinter. Two fantastic talents and very lovely people.
25. What do you like the most, stage, movie or TV work?
REPLY
I love them all but if I had to choose it would be film, hands down! I love the intimacy only a film camera can capture.
26. Which actors have you enjoyed working with the most over the years?
REPLY
So many! It's hard to name one!
27. Which actresses have you enjoyed working with the most over the years?
REPLY
I guess I'd have to say Tia Carrere. She was just lovely and we got on so well for the 3 years we worked together. She was so generous and kind on and off set.
28. What is your favourite actor of all time? Impossible to answer!
REPLY
There are so many talented actors. Actors who I admire. Young and old, dead and alive. I'd be doing an injustice to so many to name but one as my favourite.
29. What is your favourite actress of all time?
REPLY
Again, too many to choose from; I start naming names and the list is enormous!
30. Finally – what do you want to achieve in the next 10 years?
REPLY
Personally, or professionally?
Professionally, I am just moving into directing and hope to continue. I have had an idea to write for many years, I hope to achieve something in that area. The dream would be to write a script, direct and act in it and also produce it.
Personally, remain dedicated to living life to the fullest, being open to opportunities, challenging myself and to be unafraid to try! The time is now; don't wait until you're ready!
Thank you so much Christien for your honest replies.
